Pain Management / Chronic Pain Solutions

The ROC specializes in the evaluation and management of patients with chronic pain, particularly those associated with industrial injuries. Injured workers often develop other problems in addition to their orthopedic condition that delay recovery and lead to chronic pain and disability. These problems can include poor sleep, long term use of habit forming medications, the stress associated with loss of income and the loss in the ability to perform work and other daily activities. There are multiple other factors for delayed recovery.

Effective management incorporates management of the orthopedic condition and the management of these factors for delayed recovery. The CA Medical Treatment Utilization Guidelines (MTUS) are strictly followed, promoting the provision of evidenced based treatment. Effective pain management includes thorough evaluation and treatment in several disciplines including:

  1. Orthopedic – inflammation, strength and flexibility.
  2. Neurologic - assessment of nerve function, presence of neuropathy, radiculopathy, neuropathic pain and central pain sensitization problems
  3. Pharmacologic – optimization and simplification of medications
  4. Psychosocial – the influence of factors such as: fear of re-injury, stress, insomnia, depression, anger, dysfunctional family and social structure.

Overall, effective recovery of function involves addressing all the above disciplines in a coordinated fashion.
